On the eve of the Sagarmatha Sambaad (May 16-18), themed ‘Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity’, the government of Nepal has appealed humanity to join hands for combating climate change and protecting a shared future, while asking international guests to take part in the climate dialogue.
In a recent social media post, Minister of State for Forests and Environment, Rupa BK, wrote: "Nepal is proud to host the first edition of Sagarmatha Sambaad under the theme: “Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Humanity.” ... Nepal, though responsible for less than 0.1 percent of global emissions, faces disproportionate impacts of Climate Change. Glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya may lose up to 80 percent of their volume by the end of the century if current trends continue. Recent floods and landslides have displaced over 10,000 households, underscoring the urgency of action. Nepal remains committed through policies, partnerships, and action at all levels. Our Ministry of Forests and Environment is working on policies and programmes to address the challenges. But we cannot do it alone. Climate justice demands global solidarity. Let us unite our efforts, informed by science and driven by compassion, to protect our mountains and shared future. ... We look forward to welcoming you".
Through his social media post, Chief Secretary of the government Eaknarayan Aryal, expressed confidence that the first edition of the Sambaad will foster collective understanding through the exchange of ideas and opinions, insights and experiences among policy-makers and politicians, private sectors and civil society across the globe.
The Sagarmatha Sambaad aims to enhance better understanding on equitable and justifiable solutions to the critical challenges, including those facing local communities, Chief Secretary Aryal wrote, calling all to come together to chart the path of well-being of our people and planet.
"Our collective commitment to save our planet and humanity will be instrumental in ensuring the sustainability of the planet, he stated: We look forward to welcoming you to this important dialogue in Kathmandu in May 2025."
