A government-level study team has been created to examine possible changes to Nepal’s voting system, following a high-level meeting held at Singha Durbar on Thursday.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Sushila Karki said the country must rethink the practicality of inter-constituency voting, noting that parties often face heavy financial burdens transporting voters, opening the door to corruption. She added that Nepalis living abroad also deserve voting rights and that the traditional election process fails to match the expectations of Gen Z.
PM Karki highlighted the need for innovation, stressing that any new system will require political consensus and proper preparation. Officials from the Home Ministry, Law Ministry, Policy Research Institute, and the Department of National ID and Civil Registration were present, with the Policy Research Institute presenting its study on overseas voting.
Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal said the government is under pressure to introduce new practices and correct past mistakes as the election approaches.
