The Nepali Congress is preparing to announce the timetable for its 15th General Convention by the end of Poush, with party leaders indicating that the long-running dispute over holding a regular or special convention is finally easing.
After weeks of gridlock in the Central Committee, President Sher Bahadur Deuba has taken direct charge of negotiations, holding multiple rounds of talks with senior leaders to settle the issue. Leaders say discussions have now shifted toward agreement, and the convention schedule is expected to be presented at Sunday’s meeting.
Although a significant faction, supported by more than half of the Convention Representatives, has been pushing for a special convention, Deuba has emphasized completing the regular convention within the existing timeline. General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma raised concerns about meeting the deadline but agreed that the process must now move forward rapidly.
Talks between the two sides are still ongoing, with the special-convention camp asking for formal communication before entering negotiations. The Central Committee will reconvene at 2 pm on Sunday, where leaders expect the long-delayed schedule to be formally tabled.
