Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has stressed the need to find a safer alternative route to climb Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), saying the current route is becoming increasingly dangerous.
During a discussion at the ministry on Friday, it was concluded that alternatives to the traditional route from the Khumbu Icefall to Camp 1, must be explored due to its complex and risky nature.
“Sagarmatha is our national pride. Every year, thousands of climbers, both Nepali and foreign, come to scale it. We need to find secure, environment-friendly, and sustainable solutions to protect their lives,” Minister Pandey said.
At the meeting, renowned French mountaineer Mark Mari Batart and Nepali climber Sping Kaji Sherpa presented detailed research, surveys, and photographic evidence about a possible alternative route to the summit.
Batart and Sherpa have been actively working on the new route exploration campaign since 2018.
